Get This Album: V/A - "The Earthen Siphon"
Malignant Records and Kalpamantra team up once again to deliver an absolutely colossal slab of dark ambient and death industrial. On The Earthen Siphon we are given 33 tracks which cover a good chunk of the Malignant Roster, as well as a few other artists (new signings possibly?). I think that it goes without saying this be declared a must have before I even delve deeper into it. The compilation is split between the ambient artists and the noisier ones, although somewhat skewed in favor of the noisy, death industrial/black noise material . There are of course many of the known acts such as Caul. Phelios, Terra Sancta, Blood Box, Phragments, The Vomit Arsonist, Theologian, Steel Hook Prostheses, etc. who all deliver the quality you would expect. It's incredibly hard to pick a favorite from so much solid material, but I am leaning towards Blood Box - "Chthonian Rapture" for conjuring exactly what the title suggests - the wonders of a fathomless, mystical, subterranean abyss. In addition, most of the recent signings make an appearance here too, including Shock Frontier, who bring devastation on a brutal collaboration with The Vomit Arsonist; Skorneg , a new project of Fred from Cyclic Law / Visions & Christian Corvellec of Skinwell, who is one of my favorite drone acts ever and lives up to that again with their deep mesmerizing piece; the crushing death industrial act Gnawed who collaborates with Steel Hook Prostheses; the arcane black noise 3-piece T.O.M.B. who also do a collab with The Vomit Arsonist, and more. In addition to all of the aforementioned, there are some new names that I am unfamiliar with. My top pick goes to Ascetic Hedonism for their visionary, primitive ritual ambient piece "Pau'guk" which really captured my attention. And if that isn't enough, there are even more epic collaborations including STROM.ec & Kristoffer Ousted and the completely massive pairing of stalwarts Yen Pox & Xiphoid Dementia which is worth the price of admission alone! It goes without saying that you must acquire this immediately. Huge props to Malignant Records for continuing to deliver quality over the years (and for the excellent mail order prices!) and Steven Williams of Kalpamantra for putting these compilations together.
