Get This Album: Apocryphos / Atrium Carceri / Kammarheit - "Onyx"
I was going to do a review of the new collaborative album Onyx from respected dark ambient producers Apocryphos (Robert Kozletsky of Psychomanteum & Shock Frontier), Atrium Carceri, and Kammarheit, but let's be real...it's a fucking collaborative project from Apocryphos, Atrium Carceri, and Kammarheit! If you read this blog than you already know this is a must own dark ambient record and there is no review necessary. This is pretty much the dream team of dark ambient drone music right here and, as expected, their joint work is exceptional on every level. Onyx, released via Atrium's own Cryo Chamber label, is full of extremely deep, visionary, and dreamlike soundscapes. The tracks are a mixture of each artist's own sound, but when melded together they take on a life of their own and the end product isn't especially similar to any one producer. The foggy, ghostly drones of Kammarheit are present, along with the more melodic undertones you hear in Apocyphos material, coupled with the subtle sfx and pristine production found in Atrium Carceri's work. As expected it's more on the droning side of the spectrum and the typical Atrum Carceri sound is the least present (although his newer work has been more drone-y). Overall, it's an incredible journey through lavishly constructed, spacious, and beautifully dreary territories. Perfect for meditation and expeditions through the ghostly realms behind the waking world. I've had it on repeat since getting it, with no plans to stop listening any time soon. Again, it goes without saying that this is a must own record - so get it!
